Description

Aciclovir, is an antiviral drug.  It treats a number of herpes virus infections, such as:

• eye infections
• genital herpes
• cold sores

If you’ve had these infections before or if your immune system is compromised, your doctor may advise taking aciclovir to prevent future infections. Moreover, it is used to treat shingles and chickenpox.

Acyclovir is a member of the synthetic nucleoside analogues class of antiviral drugs. It functions by preventing the herpes virus from spreading throughout the body. Acyclovir doesn’t treat cold sores or genital herpes, stop outbreaks from happening or stop the virus from spreading to other people.

Aciclovir can be obtained with a prescription. It comes in pills, liquid to drink, eye ointment, cold sore, and genital herpes cream forms. Although this is often only done in hospitals, it is occasionally administered by injection.
